We Need Your Help

As a historical land mark in the Westfield community St. Peter's has stood the test of time to remain one of the more photographed and recognized buildings in the Village of Westfield, New York.  For the past twenty plus years St. Peter's Episcopal Church has housed the, Westfield Community Kitchen, an non-profit that provides a nourishing meal to whom ever is in need Monday - Friday from 11:30am - 12:30pm. 

In addition to the housing of the above mentioned, Westfield Community Kitchen, St. Peter's has and continues to house a number of community minded groups that meet on a regular basis within the walls of our beloved Church. 



 

You will also notice that St. Peter's Episcopal Church does hold a number of special events at the Church from time to time ... such as the "Messy Church / Pancake Supper"!  We very much want to continue these type of Fun, Children Friendly, Community Events long into the future...

 

 

 

 



 

More recently the Church has been able to begin the, Tiny House - Micro Homeless Shelter Project.  We hope to bring awareness to the needs of those that are having to deal with very difficult times in their lives, and the lack of resources in our local communities.  The members of St. Peter's hope to continue to provide relief to those in need and create more opportunities for the homeless segment of the local population.

 

Additionally, we are all aware of the fact that historically there have always been groups that have not been treated fairly by the majority.  People have been mistreated because of their religious beliefs, color of their skin, gender, weight, economic status, political affiliations, and sexual orientation.  St. Peter's truly believes that we are all Loved By God ... and ... We Are All Children of God.  You are welcome to join us ... No Exceptions!



In today's difficult economic times St. Peter's finds it's self in a short-fall for 2014.  Our annual Church  financial drive is falling short by 50% of the minimum goal  needed for us to ensure the continuing of our local Ministry.  Additionally, we are looking at not having the funds needed for maintaining our historical building! 

 

$80,000.00 + needed in annual donations 2014 to keep doors open



We hope to continue to offer a home for the Westfield Community Kitchen, Support of local community groups, relief for those in need and those that find themselves homeless, a place to worship and learn about God, and a safe place for all those that wish to avail themselves of Church related services ... but we can not continue without your financial support.

January 26, 2014 marked the 184th annual meeting of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Westfield New York.  The meeting began at 12:00 noon and continued until approx. 2:30pm.  The theme of the meeting as well as for this the 2014 year is, "St. Peter's On The Move."  An annual report had been printed and hard-copies distributed to all members in attendance.  Those Church Members that wish to receive a hard-copy may contact the Church Business office and request one.  Additionally, a pdf file will be posted on the Church website for review. 

 

The four directives set forth by Bishop Franklin for the Diocese of Western New York where reviewed in a PowerPoint presentation as well during the course of the meeting.  The four main directives are as follows:

 

1. Claiming our Episcopal Identity
2. Financial Sustainability
3. Preserving our buildings
4. Evangelism

Should you wish to have/receive a hard-copy of the PowerPoint presentation, again you may contact the Church Business Office Monday - Friday from (9:00 am - 1:00 pm).  We do plan on having the PowerPoint posted on the Church website as well.

Homeless Project



It has become clear to our Church membership that there is indeed a need for resources in our community of Westfield, NY.  For those that are homeless or in need of safe housing there are no public assistance offices located in our community. Those that are looking for assistance  would have to travel to Dunkirk (about 15 miles away) or to Jamestown (about 25 miles away) and let's be honest ... if you have no money or transportation 15 - 25 miles is a rather long distance.  In fact, there truly are not many services offered in the other two near-by  communities of Ripley and Brocton either ... we would like to do something about that. 

While working to come up  with some sort of action plan to help the homeless population in and around our community, we found that there was an Episcopal Parish in Eugene, Oregon Episcopal Church of the Resurrection that had a hand in helping their whole community come together to try and address the needs of homeless in their community.  They had come up with a Conestoga Hut design shelter that measures 6' x 10' and helped to start things off by having a number of them in their parking lot.

The city of Eugene then came up with a dedicated area and homeless housing project the call "Opportunity Village". 

 Link to Opportunity Village, Eugene: http://www.opportunityvillageeugene.org/   We found that our small Church parking lot would not allow us to build that style shelter, however we found yet another design created by Paul Elkins that he had in mind for use as an emergency deployment shelter. We did attempt to use parts of both the Church of the Resurrections' Conestoga Hut and Paul Elkins' Emergency Deployment Shelter.  The St. Peter's portable homeless shelter size is approx. 4' wide x 8' long x 38" high.  It is clear that one small portable homeless shelter does not a village make ... however we are hopeful that the good people of Ripley, Westfield, and Brocton will want to become involved with helping to come up with a solution for those in our communities that are having to deal with a very difficult time in their lives.

We hope that this little portable shelter may help in some small way.  The cost to build is in the $300.00 range so when you break-it-down ... if 15 people donated $20.00 each ... another shelter could be built.  How many of us in WNY go out for pizza, wings, and a beer to find that we have spent much more than $20.00 on a quick dinner?  Between the three communities of Ripley, Westfield, and Brocton there are about 5,500 people ... something needs to be done to help that percentage of the population that are homeless or in need of safe housing.  Our true hope is that something more permanent can be done so those that are in need can be served.
